Day #64: Give with Habitat For Humanity (Bldg Team) in Kingsland, GA 1

I met a team of volunteer construction workers this morning at a Habitat For Humanity work site in Kingsland, GA.

Day #64: Give with Habitat For Humanity (Bldg Team) in Kingsland, GA 2

Habitat For Humanity is a Christian Housing Ministry that has helped build over 400,000 decent, affordable houses and served more than 2 million people around the world.

The 3-bed 2-bath house we worked on today is being built for a single-mom with three young kids.

We started the roof this morning, which consisted of nailing down the plywood boards and then rolling out the black waterproofing paper and tacking it down. There was lots of hammering action.

HFH has building and renovating sites around the globe so, now that I got my hands dirty, I am sure today won't be the last house that I help build.

Have you ever helped build a HFH house?

  1. In my previous life as a Student Affairs administrator, I was the advisor to our college habitat chapter, and we co-sponsored a build every single fall!

  2. For part of my community service requirement in high school, a group of us traveled to Nogales, Sonora, for a weekend of home building with HFH. We worked on one that was almost complete, structurally, and started one from the ground... literally just clearing the lot.
It was one of the best and most memorable high school experiences.

    1. It was great to see everyone come out Saturday, thanks so much for your help Tim! The most amazing part was that we planned on 15-20 people to come out and help build that morning, but the end count was 28!! You don't have to be part of a group, anyone can just show up on site and lend a hand, its a great way to kick off your weekend :)

Our family spent 2011 traveling the USA in an RV, striving to intentionally "give every day" for the glory of God. We interviewed CEOs of nonprofits and served alongside over 40 organizations and churches.

Our Pledge

We hereby pledge:

- To spend intimate, quantity time with our family.
- To actively help the poor, the sick, the lonely, and the helpless.
- To value, protect, and advocate for children.
- To de-emphasize the importance of “stuff” in our lives.
- To bring publicity to good causes and good people.
- To live with intentionality, as if this year was our very last.
- To observe the needs in our country/community – and then do something about them.
- To give – every day.
