Day #60: Give by Going Barefoot

Day #60: Give by Going Barefoot 1

This morning we told the girls that we were not going to wear shoes. Our oldest wanted to know if we were still "going to go outside." She was thrilled at the idea of running around with bare feet.

Today, was Toms Shoes' One Day Without Shoes.

Toms Shoes is a company that is acutely aware of global poverty and how shoes can change lives.

Toms Shoes has created an amazing business model: With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One.

Today, 250,000 people around the county went barefoot to help bring awareness. Here in Woodbine, GA it may have been just the four of us.

We took a short walk in our campground barefoot. The girls didn't seem to think anything of it. Stephanie and I laughed, thinking about how the other campers were secretly talking about the weird family walking around in the dirt without shoes. "Now, we're REALLY hippies!" Stephanie quipped.

This afternoon I went to the library and the grocery store. Wearing shoes and a shirt is a requirement by most establishments so I wore my pair of Toms and they let me in.

Do you have a pair of Toms shoes? Did you go shoeless today?

  1. One man in my class today did not wear shoes. The professor loved it! I like the idea of Tom's shoes but am completely turned off by the style though.

    1. Boots and running shoes fit me better, but if I didn't have any shoes they would be awesome.

And they are "in style" as far as culture goes.

I am a big fan of the One for One model.

      1. That is very true. I have seen people all over the place wearing them and I am excited that for every pair sold they give a pair away to someone in need. That is awesome!

  2. Did you know that Airwalk is now doing the same thing? Their shoes are at Payless and much cheaper. I love the idea of Tom's and I actually like the way they look.

I did not hear about the "shoe free" day until later this afternoon, but I think it is awesome!

  3. We love going "bare-eee foot" (Sugar's way of saying it) around here - in fact, before Sugar was born I went to work barefoot one day, on accident - just walked out and got in the car and drove away without realizing I wasn't wearing my shoes, simply because I don't wear shoes unless I have to :)

Some of Tom's Shoes are cute, they are expensive - but I am a fan of the One for One model and that excuses the prices!

  4. I've never heard of this, but so wish I would have. I'm a barefooted gal any time I can be!

  5. Darn, I didn't hear about the barefoot day until too late! I checked out the website and I do like the wedges. I will be purchasing them!

    1. Cool. Did you go anywhere barefoot or stay home?

We talked about how certain places would be easier to be shoeless for a day (beach towns, college campuses, etc).

Our family spent 2011 traveling the USA in an RV, striving to intentionally "give every day" for the glory of God. We interviewed CEOs of nonprofits and served alongside over 40 organizations and churches.

- To de-emphasize the importance of “stuff” in our lives.
- To bring publicity to good causes and good people.
- To live with intentionality, as if this year was our very last.
- To observe the needs in our country/community – and then do something about them.
- To give – every day.
