The Ghazvini Learning Center is a "second chance" school for middle school and high school students in Tallahassee, FL. Essentially, it is the final opportunity for students who have been dismissed from other schools to attend a traditional type learning environment.
Genesis Church, which is located just minutes away from the school, partnered with the school administration to create the Ghazvini Initiative. Every Tuesday, people from Genesis head over to Ghazvini during the last period of the day to lead an activity.
Sometimes they do teamwork challenges. Other times, they just shoot hoops on the basketball court. Today, we played "Capture the Flag." I was almost immediately nicknamed "Tommy Hilfiger" by some of the boys. Another leader there assured me that Tommy Hilfiger was a good name compared to a lot of others they come up with.
Genesis Church also rewards students for attending class. Recently, the church took a group of students with good attendance to a local Science Center. Student attendance has more then doubled since the conception of the Ghazvini Initiative.
