Day #134: Give a Phone Call to Your Parents

Day #134: Give a Phone Call to Your Parents 1

I talk to my parents on the phone often. I call them and they call me. They never seem to tire of hearing my voice or wanting to know how our family is. They enjoy talking to me, to Stephanie, and - of course - their grandkids.

Today, I called my mom. Like always, she was excited to talk. She asked how we liked our campground, where we would go to church tomorrow, and when I would be going back to the dentist.  She told me, "Happy (early) Father's Day!" I had forgotten that is tomorrow until she mentioned it.

Stephanie and I talked afterward about how we hope that our girls will always want to involve us in their lives - even when they are adults and have families of their own.

We believe the best way to ensure a strong relationship with our kids when they are older is to have an awesome relationship with them now. We're doing our best to be intentional about that (In fact, that's one of the reasons we piled into an RV together this year!).

How often do you talk to your parents on the phone?

  1. My 89 year old mother suffers from Alzheimers and remembers very little. She does however still remember me so I ring her several times a week. She also rings me when she's scared or confused. I recently started sending her photos from her youth three times a week. Interestingly ... she can't remember yesterday or even a 1/2 hour ago but she remembers much of her youth. The photos seem to stimulate her memory and that is a good thing. It also helps her converse with her care givers as they ask her about the photos.

  2. I talk to my parents (and sisters) at least once a week. I often talk to my Dad a few times a week. Usually they are short conversations because both of us run crazy schedules but occasionally I get a longer one in - and I enjoy those.

Our family spent 2011 traveling the USA in an RV, striving to intentionally "give every day" for the glory of God. We interviewed CEOs of nonprofits and served alongside over 40 organizations and churches.

Our Pledge

We hereby pledge:

- To spend intimate, quantity time with our family.
- To actively help the poor, the sick, the lonely, and the helpless.
- To value, protect, and advocate for children.
- To de-emphasize the importance of “stuff” in our lives.
- To bring publicity to good causes and good people.
- To live with intentionality, as if this year was our very last.
- To observe the needs in our country/community – and then do something about them.
- To give – every day.
